Sublime Stitching is tiny! As in teeny-tiny! This is an independently owned and operated
honest-to-goodness home-grown business.
It all started once upon a time...
Sublime Stitching was founded in Austin, Texas in 2001 by Jenny Hart, due to an overabundance of bunny-n-duckie patterns and outdated, overly-difficult instructions for embroidery. After first trying embroidery in the summer of 2000, Hart was unable to find any alternative patterns for embroidery (cutesy teddy bears, duckies, bunnies and scarecrows seemed to be the sole aesthetic of needlework). Instead of waiting for the craft industry to do something new, she did it herself. Jenny decided to create the company she wished existed: introducing her own designs in non-traditional themes, with new education and new anything for embroidery. (Things got a little crazy after that.)
At a time when martini, pinup and tattoo patterns for embroidery were simply unheard of, Sublime Stitching "This Ain't Your Gramma's Embroidery" was born -and took off with the newly burgeoning movement of independent crafters and designers. Sublime Stitching introduced edgy embroidery patterns, all-in-one embroidery starter kits and entertaining, now-I-understand-it instructions to bring embroidery back to life for a new generation of needleworkers. Hart's pioneering take on an ages-old handcraft was met with worldwide press, and hordes of loyal crafters, thankful for finally having the first alternative to geese in bonnets.
For nearly ten years, Sublime Stitching has remained a cornerstone business of the alternative craft market, and a model company of the DIY movement. Sublime Stitching offers unique resources for embroidery that appeal to stitchers new, and not-so-new to the medium. The tremendous success of Hart's signature embroidery style led to a series of titles of the same name with Chronicle Books.
Jenny's vision for updated embroidery has grown from her first line of four design sheets to over fifty themes, including the collaborative Artist Series, and a complete product line that includes Jenny's choice of quality tools and textiles for embroidery. Through Sublime Stitching, Jenny has taught embroidery to thousands with her uniquely clear instructions, books, workshops and appearances.
Even though Sublime Stitching is based deep in the heart of Texas, it's a tiny, independent company right here in Austin. Its success has been firmly rooted in public support, and the reach has been worldwide. That's why Sublime Stitching endeavors to maintain fair-trade relationships both locally and internationally and to collaborate with communities of other independent crafters, artists and locally-owned businesses whenever possible.
Jenny Hart
Jenny is the owner/founder of Sublime Stitching. She is the pattern and product designer, content writer and editor for the site. She embroiders, draws, tweets here, there and sometimes here, travels a whole bunch, blogs on Sublime Stitching, Embroidery As Art , Feeling Stitchy and Dinosaurs and Robots, and lays awake nights feverishly masterminding the direction of Sublime Stitching. Jordan Lee - Shipping Desk
Jordan holds down the order desk at Sublime Stitching. He spends his working days fillingorders and answering shipping-related questions. His non-working days are spent working at a recording studio, creating his musical masterpiece and leveling up characters on the computer. You can listen to his music here if you so please.
And with a little help from our friends...
Alicia Traveria - ayahdesign.com
Freelance illustrator, designer, and crafter extraordinaire, I sometimes turn to multi-talented Alicia to lend her skills for the occasional pattern sheet, print ad or packaging label.
Amy Bindel - Early Bird Special
Amy has been a long-time supporter, fan and friend. Not only that, but Amy has a beautiful way with stitches (so neatly done! such pretty colors!). Amy helps me stitch up project examples, contributes to the occasional project tutorial, and also blogs for Feeling Stitchy.
