Deer design from Sublime Stitching's Forest Friends

Did you know that embroidery transfers can be imprinted directly on wood and used as a template for woodburning? It's true! Just imprint the wood like you would your fabric for a pattern to follow, or trace it with carb with a woodburning tool like so...

You'll Need:

· 1 raw wood cutting board (untreated)

· Sublime Stitching Forest Friends
or any other design
-or-
· (optional)  Carbon Transfer Paper + Tracing Stylus

· tape

· scissors

· Woodburning tool
(available at most craft stores)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Photocopy and print out pattern to desired size. My cutting board is 7 x 12 inches, so I have made my image 5 x8 inches. Cut out the pattern and center onto the board, or place wherever you desire your image. Tape the top edge of the image to the board.

2. Place the carbon transfer paper underneath the image and trace with the stylus (or, if you are using an iron-on transfer pattern, you can imprint the design directly on the wood, just as you would on fabric).

3. Once finished, remove image and carbon paper. Touch up any areas, if needed.

4. Choose the appropriate tip for the woodburning tool (bigger tips make thicker lines, smaller tips make finer lines). I have used a tapered point tip. Plug in and turn the woodburning tool on and preheat for at least 5 minutes (or according to manufacturer's instructions).
Burned images are permanent, so practice a few lines on a blank piece of wood before tackling the cutting board!

CAUTION: Hot irons can cause severe burning, so use carefully. Always rest point on
a fireproof holder. Keep away from children and combustible materials. Never leave a hot iron unattended.
5. Slowly and carefully retrace the carbon outlines with the woodburning tool. For a deep and dark consistent line, apply light pressure while slowly moving the tool.
OPTIONAL: Treat the cutting board with mineral oil, and care like you would any other wooden cutting board.
